This workaround gives limited access to Amazon Prime Video due to it displaying all the American content on Amazon Prime but only allowing access to what appears to be the content that is available in both the US and Canada. So be warned this is not a perfect fix!
Amazon is finally taking notice of the cord-cutting market to the north! With the end of 2016 came the advent of Amazon Prime Video service in Canada!
With yet another great service being offered to Canadian cord-cutters it seems 2017 is likely to be a good year for the Roku! Just one hitch… there is no Amazon Prime Video channel for the Roku for Canadian users.
Since Amazon Prime Video has been available in Canada since December of 2016 I felt it would be a good idea to see if there is a work around or fix for this in the mean time. At least until Amazon makes a Roku channel for Canadian users.
Fortunately there is a work around and it works neatly with my current methods for watching US content on the Roku. It also happens to be pretty easy especially if you are already a Canadian with US content on the Roku via the SmartDNS/VPN method I outline here. It will require a SmartDNS or VPN service like those offered by Overplay.
So the solution is based on the use of two factors. First there is a Amazon Prime Video channel for the Roku for American users. Secondly once you subscribe to Amazon Prime Video Canada you can use these login credentials to connect to the service via the American Prime Video Roku channel.
The single downside is that when the Amazon Prime Video channel is up and working All the Prime Video content is shown and only the Canadian content is accessible. So there will be a lot of content with the message “This title is not available in your current location”. So bear that in mind when surfing the channel on the Roku.
The website access for Prime Video will only display the Canadian content so if you are searching for something to watch best to do it via the smartphone app or the website first then watch it via the Roku!
This means that after you have subscribed to Amazon Prime Video via Amazon.ca you can setup the service on the Roku given you have setup the Roku with a US Roku account and installed the Amazon Prime Video US Roku channel.
After subscribing to Amazon Prime Video via Amazon.ca you will need to link the Prime Video service to your Roku channel.
Open the Roku channel and when it loads it will ask you how you want to connect your Roku device with your Amazon Prime Video subscription.
There are only two options:
- Sign-in to your Amazon account via the Roku (not this one)
- Register via the Amazon Prime website (this one)
Select the option which will have you registering the Roku device via the Amazon Prime Video website. Upon selecting this option the Roku channel setup will provide the “Access Code” you need in the Prime Video website.
Now visit the Prime Video website and proceed with registering your Roku device to be associated with your Prime Video subscription.
To do this visit the Prime Video website and Sign in.
Click on “Account & Settings –> Your Devices”
Follow the on screen instruction until you are asked to input the “Access Code” (pair code) from the Roku channel. After inputting the code your Roku channel will display a ‘success’ message.
Upon seeing the ‘success’ message you will have now completed accessing Prime Video services in Canada on the Roku!
If this all sounds a little confusing try using the step-by-step below to sort the whole thing out but essentially the setup is pretty straight forward.
To setup the Amazon Prime Video service on the Roku follow these instructions:
- Setup the Roku with a US Roku account by following these instructions. (Setting up SmartDNS/VPN)
- Then install the Amazon Prime Video channel.
- Subscribe to Prime Video via Amazon.ca
- Start the Roku-to-Prime Video pairing by opening the Roku channel via on your TV. Select the “Register on the Amazon website” option to receive a pairing code.
- Finish the Roku-to-Prime Video pairing via the Amazon Prime Video website
- This can be done by going to “Account & Settings –> Your Devices” and following the instructions and entering the pairing code you just received via the Roku/TV
- After entering the pairing code via the website the Roku channel will update with a “Success” message
- Happy Streaming Amazon Prime Video content via the Roku!
The only downside is that “American Only” content is visible but will not stream. It will have a message “This title is not available in your current location”.
However, the website access for Prime Video will only display the Canadian content so if you are searching for something to watch best to do it via the smartphone app or the website first then watch it via the Roku!
